Disclosure Day

I finally got around to watching “Disclosure Day” this weekend, after it got down to a price I was willing to pay on Amazon.  It’s Spielberg and there was a lot of hype around it when it premiered in June, but I have to say… meh.

The action scenes were excellent.  Emily Blunt was amazing.  Colin Firth has no right to look that good at my, uh his, age.  It had the right amount of humor to break the tension.  I don’t know if it was intentional, or not, but I got a chuckle out of Emily Blunt singing “Someday My Prince Will Come” while sitting next to the guy who became famous for playing Prince Charles on “The Crown” (Josh O’Connor).

In the end, though, the story left me feeling a little flat.  And that’s fine, not every story hits with everyone, and I’m certainly in no position to criticize Spielberg.  In an interview after the movie premiered, he said that “Disclosure Day” was a “summation of my life in science fiction.”  He’s certainly made some great science fiction in his life, and for that, as a true sci fi geek, I am truly grateful.

One thing he said in the interview, though, caught my ear.  That the movie would make people question their faith, “What does this do to the fundamental beliefs that many of us have? Is God our God only on this planet? Or is God a god for every system where there’s civilization and intelligent life, and even developing life?”

I’m honestly not sure why this is a question.  The Bible is pretty clear that the creator God is the God of the universe, and everything in it.  I touched on this previously when 3I/ATLAS made its fly-by of our solar system.  Is it possible that the God that created the hummingbird, the platypus, the octopus, and the human eye, created life elsewhere?  Why yes, yes it is.  Are we the only ones here?  Maybe.  Is there life elsewhere in the universe?  Maybe.  I actually hope there is.  But if there is or there isn’t, it doesn’t impact my faith.

“The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” – Psalm 103:19

That all said, if you’re a sci-fi fan, the movie is still worth checking out.  Have you seen it yet?  What did you think?
