“This child has been sent to fill your heart. He is born for no other purpose. When the heart gives itself up through faith, it learns what His name is: “Sweet Jesus.” No word can express or understand how the heart can hold so great a treasure! The heart is made sweet, glad, and fearless, for it is at peace despite all suffering. What is there that can harm it? Where the Child is, all will be well. The heart and the Child cannot be separated.” – Martin Luther, Christmas Day, 1520
Dutch artist Abraham Bloemaert was born in Gorinchem, Netherlands, on Christmas Eve, 1566. He was a devout Catholic who lent his talents to many churches and cathedrals throughout Europe, producing magnificent altarpieces. Bloemaert was also a prolific producer of paintings, engravings, and drawings. This depiction of the engraving “The Holy Child” is from the St. James Calendar of the Christian Year, available from the Fellowship of St. James.
Wishing you and yours a blessed Christmas Day. May all our hearts be sweet, glad, and fearless.
