If you were to look at a map of Albuquerque, you’d notice an area called The International District. You might think to yourself, “Gee, that sounds like an interesting place to visit.”
You would be wrong.
The corridor along Central Avenue – aka, Historic Route 66 – is a hotbed of violent crime, drug abuse, prostitution, poverty, and rampant homelessness. The International District is better known locally as the War Zone. The crime and poverty in the War Zone is not new, however, the drug abuse, homelessness, and violent crime has increased significantly in the last few years.
In 2009, Reverend Mark Kluzek went into the heart of the War Zone and started God Cares About You Mission. His passion was to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to help the poor. He began the work of God Cares About You by himself, believing in the power of the Holy Spirit, through God’s Word, to lead him and touch people’s lives.
Sixteen years later, God Cares About You is busier than ever. The Mission has a permanent presence near the intersection of Pennsylvania and Central, serving the working poor, and the homeless. Hot meals are provided four days per week, as well as bag lunches, groceries, clothing, and laundry services. Worship services and Bible study are provided on Thursdays. Saturday mornings are home to a thriving children’s ministry.
The need has increased drastically of late. The mission has gone from serving ~40 meals per day to ~140. The need is real, and we could use your help.
If you, or your business or organization, is interested in making a cash donation, the mission would be grateful. Donations can be made online at the mission website (donations are processed through Christ Lutheran Church).
If you’re in the Albuquerque area, and interested in donating food or clothing, please message me and I’ll work with you to arrange a time and place for a pickup. We will gratefully accept any food donations, but single serving protein sources (e.g., canned or packaged tuna, Vienna sausages, canned chicken, canned soup, etc.) are ideal. New or gently used clothing are welcomed, including anything warm as we approach the colder winter months.
